Be the Person Everyone Wants to Work With
And build stronger teams, faster results, and a better career.
If you want to work with great people, it starts with being one.
You probably know the Gandhi quote:
Be the change you want to see in the world.
Every small habit you practise shapes the culture around you.
Integrity. Kindness. Ownership. They’re contagious.
Ready to stand out for all the right reasons (and make work better for everyone)?
These 5 habits aren’t just nice, they’re a strategic career advantage. Everyone wins, including you.
1. Assume Positive Intent
It’s easy to jump to conclusions when tension flares. But most workplace friction isn’t personal. It is often caused by stress, timing, or miscommunication.
When you start from curiosity, not defence, everything shifts. Try thinking:
“They’re probably under pressure, not criticising me.”
“Maybe there’s more to the story.”
Lead calmly, and others will mirror your tone.
2. Be Teachable
Stop asking for “feedback” and start asking for “advice.” Harvard research shows this small change leads to 56% more helpful insights.
Feedback can feel like judgement. Advice invites support, and it feels safer for others to share their ideas.
Try asking:
“I’d love your advice… how would you approach _________?”
“I’m keen to learn more about _______ . What’s your advice on a good place to start?”
3. Take Ownership
People often worry about over-communicating. But silence leads to erroneous assumptions and more mental load for others.
Use this simple script to show you’re on it:
“Here’s what I heard…”
“My first step will be…”
“I’ll send a draft by [insert day/time].”
Confirming understanding and next steps shows you are listening and accountable. It makes it easier for everyone to move forward.
4. Share Progress Early
This one sparked a lot of conversation on my LinkedIn post, and for good reason.
Early sharing can feel risky. It often triggers fears like: “It’s not ready yet. What if it’s judged too harshly?”
But early sharing helps you:
• Bring people along the journey.
• Refine your work with better inputs.
• Align faster and avoid unnecessary rework.
When leaders role-model early sharing, it builds trust and psychological safety.
5. Be an Energy Giver
High drama drains teams. High kindness fuels them. No one wants to work with someone who constantly drains.
People remember how you made them feel, not just what you delivered. Small actions build big goodwill:
• Say thanks.
• Notice effort.
• Offer help.
